Esame, il 5 ottobre 2018

We will be having our first test on Friday, October 5. For the test, you should study:

1. The Italian alphabet (worksheet)
2. Vocabulary, "In Città," p. 23
3. Common greets and Italian expressions (worksheet)
4. Numbers, 0-100 (worksheet)
5. Days of the week and the months (worksheet)
6. How to express the date in Italian (notes)

All of my tests have a listening, reading, and writing section. You are given the whole period to complete a test. If you have extra time, you are of course allotted that time as well.

Please do not forget to study on Quizlet (quizlet.com/LaGuardiaAL/classes). Once you have clicked the link, be sure to click on my Italian 1/2 class so you can filter the appropriate flashcards to study.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to speak to me. If you feel that you need tutoring, the time to tell me is BEFORE the exam, not after.

In bocca al lupo!

Esamino, venerdì, il 21 settembre

This Friday, September 21, we will be having our first quiz. YAY!

For the quiz, you should study:
1. The Italian alphabet (study worksheet) -> audio link
2. Numbers (0-20) - study worksheet
3. Greetings and expressions - study worksheet

There will be a listening section on the quiz. I will say the letters of the alphabet as I have done previously in class, and you will have to write them as you hear them to reveal a message. I may also ask a question and you will have to respond in Italian.

There will also be a written portion of the quiz - you will be required to write a ten line conversation in Italian. You may begin with saying hello, introducing yourself, asking for the other person's name, how they are, where they are from, etc.

Please speak to me in class should you have any questions. As always, please use Quizlet to study! The direct link to my Italian 1/2 class is here.

La Festa di San Gennaro, CREDITO EXTRA

La Festa di San Gennaro, or The Feast of Saint Gennaro, is an annual event that happens every September right here in New York City. Towns in Italy each have a "patron saint" that they celebrate and honor. Gennaro is the patron saint of Naples, which is in Southern Italy. When Italians came to America, most of them were Southern Italians, and settled in areas of New York City, such as East Harlem and downtown Manhattan, this part is now known as "Little Italy."

La Festa di San Gennaro, Mulberry Street, Manhattan, celebrated since 1926.

Cannoli!

Can you find this cannolo?

In Little Italy (in Manhattan) you will find streets filled with Italians and non-Italians celebrating with food and fun each September on Mulberry Street. If you go La Festa di San Gennaro, which takes place this year from September 13 to September 23, you will receive 5 extra points towards an exam. Please send me a picture of yourself at the festival to my email, alaricchia@schools.nyc.gov.

Throughout the year, I do not accept any student offers for extra credit. I give many extra credit assignments throughout the year. If you would like extra credit opportunities, please keep in mind that you will have to take the opportunities that I offer. That being said, nobody is required to do any of the extra credit. If you do not participate in this extra credit assignment, do not worry, I offer many fun extra credit opportunities throughout the year. Of course, do not go to the feast without the permission of your parent/guardian.

More information about La Festa di San Gennaro may be found here: San Gennaro Website

This extra credit must be submitted by the end of the day on September 24, 2018. I am very strict with deadlines! Please check for a response to make sure that your email was received.

Homework, due Wednesday, September 12

All of the following assignments are due on Wednesday, September 12. Please note that I do not accept late homework assignments and that you will receive a 0 if your homework is not complete. I do not give half credit for work that is handed in late. Not doing homework will negatively affect your grade.

1. Get course contract signed by a parent or guardian.
2. Sign up for Quizlet and join my Italian 1/2 class (quizlet.com/LaGuardiaAL/classes). Do not use Facebook to sign up for Quizlet.
3. Get a spiral notebook OR binder with looseleaf and a folder used for Italian class ONLY. (Please do not get a composition notebook as these pages do not rip easily when I collect work).
4. Look up a safety, middle, and reach university as per directions given in class. WRITE down how many years of foreign language each of the schools require for admission. This will be checked and we will discuss our findings as a class. Please do not overthink this - no paragraphs or essays required - just simply write down one university/college/conservatory per category with the amount of years of foreign language recommended/required for admission.

Finally, bookmark this website or follow it. It is your responsibility to check this website for updates.

Ciao, ragazzi ...BENVENUTI!

Useful websites for this class:
1. Wordreference.com - This website allows for you to look up definitions from English-Italian or Italian-English. You can even search for verb conjugations on this website. This will be your go-to source. Do NOT use Google Translate or any other translation devices in this class. I WILL KNOW and you will receive a zero for your assignment.

It is obvious when you use Google Translate.

2. Quizlet.com/LaGuardiaAL - Please sign up for the class "Italian 1/2: 2018-2019 School Year."  Be sure to create a username and password for Quizlet. Do not sign up with Facebook. Creating your own username and password will ensure that you will be able to log in to Quizlet at school and record your high scores on your account. Recording high scores = possible extra credit points towards an exam.

3. Another useful website is conjuguemos.com. You can use this website to practice verb conjugations of both regular and irregular verbs in different verb tenses.
